INDIA AND DRS(UDRS) - Team India's stand on DRS
Hello All, Long since wrote something...
IT-life, full time busy made my hobby to take a back seat..
Nevertheless, this is high time to restart again seeing all these howlers in the India-Aus (Border-Gavaskar Trophy) series Down-under.
Accidentally, last time i wrote something was back at 2012 during horror series of India on Australia soil.
Before discussing about the disappointing decisions in the ongoing series(Ind vs Aus), lets revisit the history/Origin of the Plea for DRS.
In Indians point of view the need for challenging the Umpire Decisions came in to prominence in 2008 series (accidentally again Ind Vs Aus ) at Sydney, where the umpiring standards came under huge criticism.
Click on the below hyperlink to watch few of the howlers in that particular match and get your Blood pressure increased big time
Who can forget this incident, Pointing instructing/influencing the umpires to give the decision in Australia's favor .. Huge umpiring blunders costed us the match...
Can these howlers be allowed in a era where Technology rules world???
Immediate answer to this is UDRS - Umpire Decision Review System
There are basically three components in UDRS.
- Hawk-Eye: Eagle Eye, or Virtual Eye: ball-tracking technology that plots the trajectory of a bowling delivery that has been interrupted by the batsman, often by the pad, and can determine whether it would have hit the wicket or not.
- Hot-Spot: Infra-red imaging system that illuminates where the ball has been in contact with bat or pad.
- Real time Snickometer : It relies on directional microphones to detect small sounds made as the ball hits the bat or pad.
In addition to this Ultra slow motion replays were also a part of the UDRS
[ All these come with huge cost to the corresponding board of-course, cost of implementing the system is never a problem though for us , wealth of BCCI need not be illustrated]
So.. did this solve India's woes ?
It was first tested in India Vs Srilanka during 2009 (If i remember correct Hotspot was not used by then ) and India got almost everything absolutely wrong .. Infact ,India managed to get just one referral right out of 20 calls made, Yeahh, I accept Technology is not to blame for this..
Just wanted to keep ourselves appraised that India developed a strong disliking towards the system.
Since then, the use of UDRS became optional- India took a strong stance on not to use them.
Lets see few other incidents which supports India's stand..

By then it was fondly called as Dravid Removal System
Not sure if that would have turned India's fortunes of the tour??
That is a different story though, lets not think about the pathetic tour to England and raise our BP's.
These stuffs provides more than sufficient reasons on " Why India do not want UDRS " - Indian team Management , Captain, legends still believe that the technology is not fool-proof. It needs to be improved before implementing in Real time , Rightly so..
But does that provide any good.. ??
I get a feeling that on fearing the bad decisions using DRS are we going in to shell where the howlers, pathetic, extremely shambolic decisions cannot be avoided. During the 2014, Aus-India series the decisions such as Rahane's and Dhawan's (In Adelaide) , Pujara and Ashwin(In Gabba), would have surely been avoided if DRS is in place.
Pujara's dismissal for instance, Hitting the Helmet grill given out ??
A player in good knick- Given out like this, changes the course of the game.. Why not BCCI re-consider its stand.
Yes its a fabrication, but definitely a necessity of the hour.
When asked about it, in a recent interview , Dhoni Uttered that , " It is a very interesting question, but what is more important is that there are a lot of 50-50 decisions that are not going in our favour," he said, when asked if there was any possibility of India revising their position, given the circumstances. "We are at the receiving end more often than not. And what happens in DRS, even when the DRS is around, those decisions won't go in our favour".
He adds by saying "Because if the umpire has given out, you take DRS, it is still out, because DRS is often used to justify the decision given by the umpire. What is important is to use DRS to give the right decision irrespective of whether the umpire has given it out or not out. There are a lot of ways to use the DRS, but this is something that needs to be put in a specific way. That it doesn't really matter if the umpire has given out or not out, if the ball hits the stumps [in projection] it is out; if half the ball hits the stumps you are out", Clearly indicating that he is not with Umpire's call feature in the UDRS.
Reading these gives a slight hint , that INDIA might fancy there chances on revising its stand on UDRS after all these disappointing decisions going against us provided a few modifications in the Current UDRS is revised.
Whatever happens... In future, Obvious decisions needs to be corrected for the good of the game..!!!
There are people who says questioning the umpire's credibility is not right, taking away Umpire's job is not right.... blah..blah.. blah..
Just wanted to remain everybody...
" No body is bigger than the game, not even the umpires ..!!! "
see you next time .
Until then, Have a good one .!!

Nice one! A very necessary debate indeed. We need to stop sulking and wake up to technology. Yes, there are problems associated with it, but they can't be ironed out by simply avoiding them.
ReplyDeleteExactly.. If Technology is there.. Use it.. Slowly discrepancies will be ironed out..
